As I’m always eager to point out, Namco has a rich history in robotics and engineering. So let’s take a look at the two large Mappy and Goro robots from the early 80s!
These robots actually predate the original 1983 Mappy arcade game by years, apparently serving as the game’s inspiration.
Both bots are path-finding models designed to maneuver through mazes, with Goro being the original 1980 version weighing in at a whopping 27kg (59.5 lbs.), and Mappy being the newer compact 1981 model at a relatively lithe 4.3kg (9.4 lbs.). Both were tremendous feats of engineering when they were created: Mappy alone was worth over a whoppin’ 20 million yen!
Two very similar robots make appearances in Namco Museum Vol. 5.
